TLMM #007: Two Super Simple Ways to Get Local Small Business Clients While You Sleep

Read time: 4 mins

In this week’s issue, I want to talk about two super simple ways to get Local Small Business clients while you sleep.

These methods are not free, but are highly effective…

And even though they’re not free, they’re extremely affordable.

But before I get into exactly what I’m talking about…

Let me give you a little background first.

What Is Remarketing?

By definition remarketing refers to engaging audiences who have already interacted with your brand, to encourage them to take a desired action that may interest them, such as a conversion.

For example, a customer might visit a local small business’ website and add products to their shopping cart, but then didn’t finish making their purchase.

So through email marketing, the local small business would send out emails to remind the customer to complete their purchase…

This is often referred to as a cart abandonment email sequence.

Another common remarketing tactic example might be when a local small business would send out an email marketing campaign that would sell a product or service to an existing customer.

What Is Retargeting?

By definition retargeting is the process of targeting people who have previously visited a website.

So this typically occurs in the form of digital marketing ads on various advertising platforms such as…

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Google
  • YouTube
  • TikTok
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest

These ads are only shown to the people who have visited a local small business’ website.

Because of this, it typically doesn’t cost all that much to do.

But has a tremendous amount of upside.

The Difference Between Remarketing and Retargeting

The primary difference between remarketing and retargeting is that…

Retargeting is mostly about serving ads to potential customers based on tracking (i.e. cookies, pixels, APIs, etc.)…

While remarketing is usually based on email alone.

Why Retargeting Is So Effective

As I previously mentioned…

Retargeting is typically highly effective for your business (and your client’s businesses too) because the cost to run the ads is extremely cheap.

More specifically, the return on investment (ROI) is usually very high which makes it a no-brainer digital marketing strategy.

How Retargeting Works

After you have set up an ads account at one of the aforementioned social media platforms…

You get (or create) a pixel or tracking code which is then installed (copied and pasted) into the website.

After installation…

You then go back to the ad platform and create a custom audience which is set up to gather the data that is reported back from the pixel (or tracking code).

Once that’s created…

You then create a new ad campaign which only uses the custom audience you just created for the target audience.

How Remarketing Works

First things first…

You will need an Email Marketing Service Provider (EMSP)….

Sometimes referred to as:

  • “Email Autoresponder”
  • “CRM”

So if you don’t already have one…

Go get an account setup with one of the following Email Marketing Service Providers (EMSP)…

  1. ActiveCampaign
  2. InfusionSoft (now called Keap)
  3. MarketHero
  4. Sendlane
  5. Aweber
  6. GetResponse
  7. ConvertKit
  8. Klaviyo
  9. Etc.

Then create a specific cart abandonment email sequence that is sent out to anyone who didn’t finish the checkout process for the products/services you’re selling.

Then create at least one (preferably more) email sequence that is geared to selling your products/services to your existing customers.

From there, feel free to do as much email marketing as you choose.

Perhaps create an email newsletter that goes out once per week or once month…

Or maybe create a daily email where you tell stories about your business to build a bond with your customer list…

I think you get the idea.

How To Be Omnipresent

If you take the time to create an ad account at all of the social media platforms…

And create or get all the pixels or tracking codes installed on your website…

Then create “retargeting” campaigns at each one showing only to the people who have visited your website…

Will put your ads in front of those same people no matter where they go on the Internet.

Essentially your ads will show up to them whether they’re on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, etc.

By doing this…

Your business will become omnipresent.

(BTW, you can (and should) do all of this for your client’s business as well!)

What You Should Do Next

Exactly this! 😉

Then do it for your clients!

Because most local small businesses are not implementing these digital marketing strategies…

And obviously they should be!

So if you’re a Local Small Business Consultant or Digital Marketing Agency Owner…

It should go without saying that you should have your local small business clients implementing these two digital marketing strategies ASAP!

Both strategies will produce more sales for your clients which in turn will make your clients happy…

Thus making it easier for you to…

  1. Retain your clients so that they won’t want to stop working with you
  2. Up-sell your clients to additional digital marketing services

They’re happy, you’re happy!
