TLMM #016: Eliminate The Client Getting Guesswork With This Minimal Viable Service

Read time: 4 mins

In this week’s issue, I want to talk about how to sell perhaps the simplest digital marketing service (or MVS – Minimal Viable Service) you can as a Local Small Business Consultant or Digital Marketing Agency Owner…

And that is websites!

But not just any website… (I’ll go into more details on that in a minute.)

Sometimes it’s necessary to go “back to the basics.”

What I mean by that is that sometimes we overthink and over complicate things when it comes to trying to “get clients.”

That’s why it’s imperative that you keep it simple.

So with that in mind…

Let’s dive in!

Websites, really???

Yes, websites!

No, really!

I know it’s hard to believe…

Because it feels so early 2000s…

But don’t let that fool you.

Even though it seems like nowadays everyone and their mother has a website…

You’d be surprised how many still don’t.

Plus, it’s easier than ever to create one using a variety of platforms. (Or even outsource it to someone on Fiverr or UpWork.)

And you can sell them for an extremely cheap price…

Which makes it an absolute no-brainer of a deal.

(Just make sure you charge enough to cover your expenses if you’re outsourcing it.)

The Ideal Website Clients

As I previously mentioned…

Believe it or not there are still local small businesses who DO NOT HAVE A WEBSITE!!!

Crazy, right?

And it’s 100% true!

Local small businesses who do not have a website are yours for the taking…

It’s like shooting fish in a barrel!

And if you want to take it one step further…

You can even sell websites to local small businesses who have terrible websites…

You know, the ones that look like they were made in the 90s. (Or even the early 2000s.)

And I completely understand if you’re thinking…

“If this business doesn’t have a website by now, then they probably don’t know the value or don’t have any interest in having one because they don’t understand the value of digital marketing as a whole…”

And while that may be the case for a few… (Probably like less than 1%.)

That’s not the case for the majority of local small businesses.

In fact, most local small businesses that don’t have a website likely because…

They don’t know how to “get” one…

Meaning, they don’t know what they need, who to build it for them, or even where to find that person to build it…

Or maybe they don’t think that they can afford one.

The Type Of Website You Should Be Selling

Remember when I said, “…simplest digital marketing service…”

That means…

We’re NOT going to be selling custom designed websites and trying to sell them for $5,000 or $10,000 a pop.

It’s not that the local small business won’t be interested in a website like that…

It’s just that we want to accomplish a couple of things…

  1. Keep it simple
  2. Keep it cheap

A templated website (or even better – a Hybrid Sales Funnel Website) will do and can be easily duplicated and deployed over and over again for each client you have…

This keeps it simple and cheap.

Because the website we’re providing is simple and cheap…

It then becomes a scalable service.

Meaning, you can have just about as many clients as you want without really increasing your workload.

This is especially true if you’re outsourcing the duplication and deployment of each website for each client.

Plus, by offering a templated website (or Hybrid Sales Funnel Website) that is extremely cheap (I mean affordable) for the client…

It allows us to charge a monthly hosting/maintenance fee.

And that’s where the real money is being made.

So for example…

You might charge the local small business owner $300 – $500 upfront for the website…

And then charge $50 – $100 for your monthly hosting/maintenance fee.

The key to getting the client to agree to the monthly fee is in the word, “maintenance”…

This is what you can use to justify the higher than normal cost associated with typically cheap web hosting with the likes of HostGator, BlueHost, etc.

It’s Not About The Website, It’s About The Relationship

Regardless of how much you charge for the website up front or how much you charge for your monthly fee…

This is the ultimate foot in the door with your new client.

So it’s imperative that you put your best foot forward with this first digital marketing service you’re providing to them…

Like over delivering on what they get versus what they actually paid.

So as long as you’re not delivering another piece of sh*t website from the 90s or early 2000s…

You’re already likely “over delivering”…

But you can over deliver even more by…

  • Communicating every step of the way
  • Delivering the website ahead of schedule
  • Adding additional bells and whistles (features)

All of which is what will build up the KLT (Know, Like, and Trust) factor, quickly creating a solid relationship with your clients.

And that’s the key…

It’s always much easier to sell to existing clients than it is to sell to new clients.

The Only Way This Won’t Work For You

…is if you don’t do the work…

Meaning, you don’t prospect for clients who don’t have a website…

And follow through with reaching out to the local small business to offer them your website services.

In all honesty, this is what prevents about 95% of “Local Small Business Consultants” or “Digital Marketing Agency Owners” from getting clients and having success.

Don’t be the 95%…

Be different.

You got this!
