What I Mean By “Local” To You
Normally when I reference “local small businesses”, I’m referring to small businesses who are NOT franchises and/or NOT in other cities or towns.
However, sometimes when people hear “local” they literally think of only businesses who are in their immediate vicinity…
Meaning, they are within a short driving distance of where they live.
And in this case that’s what I’m referring to…
Small businesses that are literally “local” to you.
Where you can jump in your car and drive to their physical location down the street or across town from where you actually live.
Again these businesses should not be more than a “comfortable” drive away from where you live.
So in my estimation that means they should be located within a 25 mile radius of your current address.
Why It’s Easier To Get Local Small Business Clients Where You Live
The main reason it’s easier to get local small business clients where you live is because…
They feel more comfortable doing business with someone who is local to them.
Meaning, that they can pick up the phone and they know you’re in the same time zone that they are…
And theoretically in a moment’s notice…
They can literally be in the same room with the service provider (you – Local Small Business Consultant or Digital Marketing Agency Owner).
The local small business doesn’t have to worry about calling someone who might be several states away and in a completely different time zone.
This gives a lot of local small businesses a sense of security and reliability.
Even if at the end of the day…
They don’t call or don’t visit your office any more often than they would if you are several states away from them or in a completely different country.
Why It’s Better To Get Local Small Business Clients Where You Live
The main reason it’s better to get local small business clients where you live is because…
It helps reduce your churn rate…
This is due to the fact that these local small businesses are more comfortable with you being more “accessible” than say your competitors…
Who are NOT in their local vicinity.
Make sense?
It’s highly unlikely that a local small business you’re working with in your hometown would choose to sever ties with you…
To pursue a Local Small Business Consultant or Digital Marketing Agency Owner who is elsewhere (another city, state, country, or time zone)…
Unless they’re either…
- Not happy with the results from service(s) you’re providing them with…
Or…
- Your competitor’s offer is too irresistible.
So to combat that…
You should create an offer that’s too good to refuse…
And actually produce the results you promise.
I know it’s not rocket science by any means.
It’s just common sense.
But sometimes we lose sight of these two simple principles…
And just need a quick reminder.
How To Get Local Small Business Clients Where You Live
There are several ways to get local small business clients where you live…
- Cold Calling
- Cold Emailing
- Doughnut Drop
- Chamber of Commerce
- BNI Meetings (or equivalent)
- Your Own Events (i.e. “Lunch and Learn”)
- Local Paid Ads (i.e. radio, tv, social media, etc.)
- Word of Mouth
I don’t think I need to go into any details about any of the aforementioned ways to attract local small business clients in your immediate area…
One of the benefits to going after local small businesses that are local to you is that once you have a few…
It helps you maintain stability in your business by reducing churn…
Which then in turn allows you to seek out additional local small business clients that are harder to get because they are NOT in your immediate area.
Thus helping you to scale your business and increase your net revenues.
