Meaning, when content is perceived as valuable, it captures and retains attention, making the audience more likely to engage and take action.
The more screen time people have per day, the more attention they are “paying.”
So with that in mind…

Why Content Is Still King
The quote “Content is king” is originally from an essay Microsoft founder Bill Gates wrote in 1996…
In it, he describes the future of the Internet as a marketplace for content…
The phrase “content is king” is not new…
But because of the increased focus on content marketing strategies…
The quote is used often.
It’s never been more true than each day that passes by.
If your content is relevant to your audience, helpful, and generates value…
You will…
- Improve trust
- Improve product understanding
- Increase traffic
- Boost brand engagement
And it’s the best way to drive traffic to your client’s and your own product(s) and/or service(s).
How To Command An Audience’s Attention
In order to command an audience’s attention…
You must be engaging.
Engagement is the key to creating attention-grabbing content…
You need to constantly experiment with new types of content and formats…
Doing so allows you to market through more social media channels and discover more tactics that work.
Because your target customer is likely switching between two or three social media networks daily…
So your content needs to be everywhere.
But no matter what, you want to encourage your audience to share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences…
And then respond to comments and feedback to show that you care about your customers/clients.
Where To Create Content For Your Ideal Audience
Honestly, that depends…
It really depends on where your audience is hanging out the most.
For a Local Small Business Consultant and/or Digital Marketing Agency Owner…
Your audience is probably hanging out primarily on LinkedIn.
But that doesn’t mean your audience isn’t on Facebook or Instagram (or anywhere else for that matter).
You just want to be strategic about it.
For a local small business…
Their audience is probably hanging out on a few different social networks such as…
- Twitter/X
- YouTube
- TikTok
But more likely than not, they are not on LinkedIn. (That is unless the local small business is B2B vs B2C.)
What Kind Of Content You Should Create
So what kind of content should you create?
Great question!
You should primarily create content that transforms the customer’s journey from “negative present” to “positive future” (courtesy of Justin Welsh).
However, you can also use interactive elements such as quizzes, polls, and contests to keep your audience engaged…
Again, for Local Small Business Consultants and Digital Marketing Agency Owners…
I would highly recommend creating content that’s transformative in nature.
You can do this by brainstorming the problems your potential customers/clients are facing day-to-day in their business like…
- Objections
- Fears
- Challenges
- Worries
Then you can figure out what your potential customers/clients aspirations are by asking them open ended questions.
Your goal should be to get potential customers/clients to think about how they would act and feel in the future once their problems are solved.
All of that information will help you understand the potential customers/clients motivation and why your solution matters to them.
