TLMM #023: Every Local Small Business Consultant Should Acquire This Invaluable Skill Set

In this week’s issue, I want to talk about how important it is to continue educating yourself by adding various skill sets to your repertoire as a Local Small Business Consultant or Digital Marketing Agency Owner…

Sure you can “get by” without virtually knowing anything about digital marketing…

Simply because you can outsource just about anything and everything you need to do in order to be a Local Small Business Consultant or Digital Marketing Agency Owner…

However, if you never add any skill sets, then you’re NOT improving your self worth.

And worse yet, you put yourself at the mercy of others who presumably have said skill sets.

So with that in mind…

Let’s dive in!

 

What Is A “Skill Set”?

A skill set is defined as a person’s range of skills or abilities.

Pretty generic if you ask me.

So let’s go a step further with the way a “skill set” is defined.

It’s more or less a collection of skills and abilities that can be applied to a professional or creative endeavor.

In this case, when I talk about “skill sets” I’m really referring to things like…

  • Copywriting
  • Funnel Building
  • Coding/Programming
  • Media Buying
  • Etc.

Basically any “skill” that you can learn in the digital marketing world.

 

Why It’s Invaluable To Have Skill Sets

Having a skill set allows you to do a couple of things…

  1. Be able to do the skill (for) yourself
  2. Be in demand for a particular skill
  3. Be able to charge a premium for your skill

All of the aforementioned reasons can set yourself apart from your competition.

This is essentially the same as going to college to develop a skill like…

  • Being a Dentists
  • Being a Doctor
  • Being a Lawyer
  • Etc.

Or if you go to a “technical” college to develop a skill like…

  • Being a Plumber
  • Being an Electrician
  • Being an Internet Technician
  • Etc.

Only typically, you can’t go to “school” to get educated to do the things we do in digital marketing.

Especially since some of the digital marketing skill sets change so rapidly…

And as we know, the curriculum in almost all colleges and universities are antiquated.

 

How Skill Sets Can Set You Up For Success

I touched on this briefly above, but if you have a very particular set of skills (in my best Liam Neeson voice from the Taken movie franchise)…

You can always be in demand.

Meaning, you will always be able to find work where you can utilize your skill set(s) for whoever is in need of it.

That’s if you want to work for someone else.

Otherwise, you can use your skill set(s) to work for yourself and become an Entrepreneur.

Either way it’s to your advantage to acquire at least one primary skill set that you can leverage in some sort of capacity.

And BTW, you should ONLY focus on ONE skill set at a time…

And not try to master a second skill set until you’ve mastered the first skill set.

 

What Skill Sets Should You Have?

Well that depends ultimately on what you want to do and what interests you the most.

There’s no right or wrong answer here.

But if you’re a Local Small Business Consultant and/or Digital Marketing Agency Owner…

It’s probably in your best interest to acquire at least one, if not more, of the core digital marketing skills that will allow you to do the following…

  1. Get leads
  2. Make sales

And then be able to apply those same two skills to help your clients get similar results.

However, both of those skills can be broken down into smaller skill sets that have a direct impact on getting either or both of those two outcomes.

 

What Skill Set Should You Have Right Now?

In my opinion, the most important skill set you can have right now is media buying (paid ads)…

Because no matter what other skill sets you can learn…

Almost none of them really matter if you can’t drive traffic to an offer (product or service) to generate leads and ultimately make sales.

You could have the most amazing sales copy on a sales page of all-time…

But if you can’t drive traffic and get people to the sales page then it doesn’t matter.

It’s like the old saying, “If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, did it actually make a sound?”

In fact, when you get really good at understanding how to effectively buy traffic…

The world is your oyster so to speak.

You’ll have a skill set that is in high demand.

Not to mention you’ll be able to create an endless supply of traffic for your own products and services.

So that’s the first skill set I would invest my time and money into in order to learn.

And after I had that skill set mastered…

I would then probably sink my teeth into becoming a world-class copywriter.

But first things, first!

Go start learning this invaluable skill set now…

And start reaping the rewards from it sooner than later.
